Today, spas and hot tubs are made in hundreds of different shapes, sizes, formats and colours to suit every requirement and budget. Modern plastics allow form fitted shapes for everybody with tailored jets to provide the maximum relaxation and enjoyment. Spas are even made of lightweight foam materials that can be easily set up or taken down making bathing truly portable and affordable.
For many years American and Canadian manufacturers have dominated the hot tub spa market producing overall good quality products. Control systems such as Balboa and Gecko and acrylics from Lucite and Aristech have always played a very important roll in the build quality and long term reliability.
More recently of coarse we see a growing influx of hot tubs and spas from Asian countries and in particular China who are set to be the biggest supplier / manufacturer in the world.
Many believe, and in particular those selling hot tubs and spas manufactured in Western countries, that Eastern products are far less superior in quality but times have changed and we do know for a fact that many Western manufacturers are having their spas built in China and very often to a better standard.
The key to any good spa is making sure the right components are used. The build quality in today's major factories is excellent and the quality control second to none, however at present only around three or four Chinese manufacturers fall into this category and the rest mainly produce inferior products falling well below the standard we should expect, of coarse the quality is reflected in the higher price but overall prices are still less than their Western counterparts largely due to the significant reduction in labour costs.
You should insist that controls are Balboa or Gecko orientated and that the shell acrylics are made by Lucite or Aristech.You must also feel comfortable with your retailer and ensure purchasing a spa is an enjoyable experience not a stressful one.
You must be certain that the retailer is reputable and the business stable, many retailers fly the “big warranty flag” but many consumers are caught in the “no warranty trap” purely as a result of the retailer going out of business and if this happens you will be left with little help or support and potentially hefty bills for repairs if your spa becomes faulty, remember if you have doubts ask for recommendations and if none can be offered, walk away !!
You must also ensure your spa retailer has a good knowledge of water control and chemical products and can advise you at every step on how to care for your spa and your spa water, this is probably the most important part of the spa purchase and often determines a good retailer from a poor one.
Always insist they offer at least one hour dedicated tuition time on how to take care of your spa water, how to manage your filtration and ensure they cover the operation of the spa, remember you will probably need to make future visits and telephone calls regarding the water treatment so always feel comfortable talking to the salesperson.
